What is a consolation prize?

In the game show of life, some people win trips to Hawaii and others...well, they get a lovely set of luggage. Not everyone gets to win the top prize in a contest or game show, but this fact is not always easy to swallow. This is usually when a consolation prize makes its welcomed appearance. A consolation prize is generally a parting gift offered to contestants who either did not win their competition or failed to appear onstage at all. The purpose of a consolation prize is to console the contestants who can only watch the winner walk away with the big prize money or the luxury automobile.

What constitutes a consolation prize varies from contest to contest. Some game shows may use donated items from sponsors as parting gifts to losing contestants, while others may have a consolation prize for placing in second or third place. In the spirit of offering actual consolation, a consolation prize is often something of fairly substantial value, such as a new computer or set of high-quality luggage. While it may not be as valuable as a new car or trip to an island paradise, a consolation prize could prove to be very useful or satisfying to the contestant who receives it.

Sometimes a consolation prize is connected thematically to the grand prize. While the winner may be traveling to Rome, Italy, the runner-up might receive a consolation prize of an elaborate dinner at an expensive Italian restaurant. The winner of a contest might drive away in a sports car, but the second place winner may receive a consolation prize of NASCAR-related clothing and memorabilia. When it comes to finding a suitable consolation prize, some game shows and contest sponsors can get quite creative.

Not all contests or game shows offer a consolation prize to the losing contestants, or they may allow the players to keep whatever winnings they accrued during the game. A consolation prize may only consist of the experience of being in a television studio or meeting a favorite celebrity or two.

Offering some sort of consolation prize to finalists of a contest is generally considered to be good form, since it does create a sense of goodwill towards the sponsors of the event. This can be very important if the contest is held on a regular basis or the game show needs to attract a fresh supply of contestants.

In Search of the Milky Way's Habitable Zone

by Leslie Mullen

Our Milky Way Galaxy is unusual in that it is one of the most massive galaxies in the nearby universe. Our Solar System also seems to have qualities that make it rather unique. According to Guillermo Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Astronomy at the University of Washington, these qualities make the Sun one of the few stars in the Galaxy capable of supporting complex life.
For one thing, the Sun is composed of the right amount of "metals." (Astronomers refer to all elements heavier than hydrogen and helium as "metals.")

Moreover, the Sun's circular orbit about the galactic center is just right; through a combination of factors it manages to keep out of the way of the Galaxy's dangerous spiral arms. Our Solar System is also far enough away from the galactic center to not have to worry about disruptive gravitational forces or too much radiation.

When all of these factors occur together, they create a region of space that Gonzalez calls a "Galactic Habitable Zone." Gonzalez believes every form of life on our planet - from the simplest bacteria to the most complex animal - owes its existence to the balance of these unique conditions.

Because of this, states Gonzalez, "I believe both simple life and complex life are very rare, but complex life, like us, is probably unique in the observable Universe."

"I think this is a very, very interesting idea," says Dr. William Borucki, a research scientist in the Planetary Studies Branch of the NASA-Ames Research Center. "I'm delighted to see this theory. I like how Gonzalez has imagined the consequences of planets existing at different parts of the Galaxy. Now scientists need to check the math to make sure it all adds up."

The Theory in Detail

Our Milky Way Galaxy is structured much like billions of other spiral galaxies. The galactic disk contains a lot of interstellar matter (like dust and gas), as well as young and intermediate-age stars. While young stars can be found scattered throughout the Galaxy, the stellar population tends to be older in the bulge around the galactic center.

Many of these older stars are gathered together into globular clusters, which orbit the nucleus of the Galaxy in a region known as the galactic "halo." Strong emissions of infrared radiation and X-rays from the galactic center indicate clouds of ionized gas rapidly moving around some sort of supermassive object, quite possibly a black hole.

There are billions of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, and some are more metal-rich than others. Part of this is a condition of age: The older a star, the more metal-poor it tends to be. That's because the most ancient stars formed from just hydrogen, helium, and lithium.

When the most massive of these stars exploded, nuclear reactions fused these light elements into heavier ones. These heavier "metals" became part of the raw material from which a second generation of stars formed. Each stellar explosion led to a greater abundance of available metals. A metal-rich star, therefore, has material that came from many previous generations of stars.

Our Sun is unusually metal-rich for a star of its age and type. Scientists aren't sure why. It could be that the Sun formed in a part of the Galaxy that had an abundance of metals, and then migrated to its present position.

Based on studies of extrasolar planets, metal-rich stars are more likely to have planets orbiting around them. One reason for this may be that a certain minimum amount of metals is needed to form rocky bodies (including the cores of the gas giant planets). A metal-rich interstellar cloud that collapses to form a star would therefore be more likely to form planets than would a metal-poor cloud.

Besides requiring a metal-rich star, a Galactic Habitable Zone excludes stars too close to the galactic center. Our Sun is a nice distance away from the galactic center, about 28,000 light years.

Being in the outer region of the Galaxy protects our Solar System from the huge gravitational tug of stars clustered near the galactic center. If we were closer in, the combined gravity of all those stars would perturb the orbit of comets in the Oort cloud.

The Oort cloud, which circles the outer perimeter of our Solar System, contains trillions of comets. The gravitational disturbances caused by other stars would send many of those comets in our direction - increasing the rate of comet impacts and endangering - if not eventually wiping out - life on Earth.

Staying away from the galactic center has an additional advantage. The center of the Galaxy is awash in harmful radiation. Solar systems near the center would experience increased exposure to gamma rays, X-rays, and cosmic rays, which would destroy any life trying to evolve on a planet.

"Large, complex organisms are much more sensitive to environmental perturbations than simple life," says Gonzalez. "Our hypothesis deals exclusively with complex life, more specifically, aerobic macroscopic metazoan life. The effects of radiation would damage the ozone layer, as well as increase radiation levels at the surface of a planet from secondary particle cascades in the atmosphere."

Keeping out of the way of the Galaxy's spiral arms is another requirement of the Galactic Habitable Zone.

The density of gases and interstellar matter in the spiral arms leads to the formation of new stars. Although these spiral arms are the birthplaces of stars, it would be dangerous for our solar system to cross through one of them.

The intense radiation and gravitation of a spiral arm would cause disruptions in our Solar System just as surely as if we were closer to the center of the Galaxy.

Luckily, our Sun revolves at the same rate as the Galaxy's spiral-arm rotation. This synchronization prevents our Solar System from crossing a spiral arm too often.

"At our location, our orbital period is very similar to that of the pattern speed of the spiral arms," says Gonzalez. "This means that the time interval between spiral arm crossings will be a maximum, which is a good thing, since spiral arms are dangerous places. Massive star supernovae are concentrated there, and giant molecular clouds can perturb the Oort cloud comets leading to more comets showers in the inner solar system."

The unusually circular orbit of our Sun around the galactic center also tends to keep it clear of the spiral arms. Most stars the same age as our Sun have more elliptical orbits.

"If the Sun's orbit about the galactic center were less circular," says Gonzalez, "the Sun would be more likely to cross spiral arms."

Thus, thanks to a lot of unusual characteristics of our Sun, our Solar System is lucky enough to lie in a Galactic Habitable Zone. Gonzalez argues that these characteristics made it possible for complex life to emerge on Earth.

More than 95 percent of stars in the Galaxy, says Gonzalez, wouldn't be able to support habitable planets simply because their rotation is not synchronized with the rotation of the galaxy's spiral arms.

Add all the other factors involved in keeping a solar system habitable, and it seems that the odds of finding another solar system in a Galactic Habitable Zone are close to impossible.

"This is a good theory," says Borucki. "I think this idea is a spark that will initiate similar research. Like a spark plug, it can't drive the car, but it provides the necessary impetus to get the car moving."

What's Next?

Gonzalez says he plans to continue his studies on the limitations of life in the Universe. He and his colleagues are working on a paper that discusses such dangers from space as transient radiation sources and large comet or asteroid impacts.

O homem e os animais - Tradutor Técnico

Written by Luiz Eduardo Couto

What's the Difference Between You and Your Dog?Understanding what consciousness is by playing hide-and-seek

written By Vlad Tark

For a very long time human beings were defined as the "rational animals".

By this it was meant that we are very apt problem solvers, that we are able to recognize patterns and find the hidden regularities existing beneath the empiric surface of the world.

However, probably due to mainly modern art, that kind of definition isn't so popular nowadays. Imagine advising a contemporary poet to be a rational animal! Moreover, animals are themselves very good problem solvers and thus, from such a viewpoint, the animal/human difference is only quantitative at best.

The focus has changed on claiming that we humans are intentional beings, we have purposes and goals, while the animals are only surviving machines driven solely by causal factors. We act in certain ways because we want certain things. The animals behave in certain ways because they are driven by their instincts. In the same way a bullet does not have the power to choose its target and it is simply bound to go in a certain direction, the animals are supposed to be bound to obey their genetic-inscribed "nature".

If the first view doesn't go well with the artists, the second view doesn't go well with the scientists: A scientist believes a certain theory only if that theory helps him make some real predictions. In this case, a good theory on the inner workings of animals must make us able to predict something about the animal behavior. But the causal theory of animals doesn't predict anything - because the animals are "very complex" machines. However, to a scientist that is simply small talk, it's an empty untestable claim.

Nonetheless, one can predict the behavior of animals by assuming they have goals. For example, one can assume a bird has the purpose of surviving, and thus it builds a nest, and thus it goes around gathering small tree branches and leaves. It is virtually impossible to describe such a behavior in causal terms, i.e. starting from the opposite direction: to assume there is some cause that determines the bird to gather a leave and that there is a cause that constraints the bird to put all its gatherings in the same place in the shape of a nest and so on. One would have to assume countless unseen "causes". It is much simpler to assume the bird has purposes.

Only once we have accepted that the difference between humans and animals does not lie in the contrast between our intentional nature and the animals' causal nature, we can truly understand the real difference.

If one plays hide-and-seek with his or her dog, one finds out a very interesting fact. At first, it seems that the dog understands the game, he understands that it has to find you and it is able to adopt this purpose. His behavior is indeed goal-driven, it has the goal of finding you. However, when you play again and again, you can notice a curious fact: when the dog starts searching for you he always first goes to the same place where you have hidden in the previous game. In other words, the dog does not understand that you yourself have the goal of hiding from it. It thinks that if it has found you there in the previous game you are probably there again. It adopts the goal of finding you, it does not act like a robot with a predetermined behavior, but nonetheless it assumes you are such a robot!

This is a subtle difference first noticed by Robert Brandom: there is a difference between having goals and being able to attribute goals. In other words, there can be unconscious goals. Animals have only unconscious goals, while we, besides having such goals, also have some conscious goals (and we are also able to asign goals to others).

The standard test of detecting consciousness is the mirror test: if an animal manages to recognize itself in the mirror, it means it has a certain awareness of itself. Insofar, the consciousness animals are: humans, chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, dolphins and orcas (killer whales).
Using the things said above one can understand why some animals manage to recognize themselves in the mirror while others don't. One does not recognize himself in the mirror because one recognizes the behavioral similarities between oneself and one's reflected image - this is virtually impossible to do because one cannot really observe oneself (we have a very improper perspective). One recognizes oneself in the mirror because one ascribes goals to the person in the mirror and ascribes goals to oneself, and then one can realize that the image has the same goals as oneself - therefore it is the same person.

So, what is consciousness? It is the ability to attribute goals (either to oneself or to others). Whether one has such an ability can be detected via empirical means such as the hide-and-seek game.

Charlene I´ve been to paradise...A felicidade esta nas coisas simples da vida - Tradutor Técnico

Text extracted from Duskdy blog

I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never been to me..Charlene’s Never Been To Me

RIGHT!!!

Don’t think I’m weird here,

BUT!

This song actually popped into my mind today. God knows why, it’s not one of my regular, usual songs that I sing. I was walking with my grandson - we had just got to that bit of the hill where the sea comes into view, that’s my favourite view when I go to the shops. Anyway just as the sea comes in to view this song comes in to my head and I start singing it.

OH MY GOD !

I remember this song – I wasn’t so old ,I was a crazy teenager I think, about seventeen or eighteen. I worked in a biscuit factory, and I remember this song coming on the radio one day.

Well !

I sobbed and sobbed to it, stood there singing and sobbing trying to pack biscuite’s. I can see myself so clearly crying to it as my neighbour packer looked on at me stupidly.

BUT WHY !

Those words would have meant nothing to me at that time. I think I would have been about eighteen . I might not have been, I sometimes get mixed up with dates. I wasn’t so old anyway. I can’t understand why this song touched me so at that point in my life. I hadn’t had many adult experiences, smiling – I wouldn’t have had would I, Ha! I was a child.

It’s just come into my mind again, so I go to You.Tube and listen to it. It’s so beautiful. Okey! I can be a bit soppy at times, but it’s weird as I’m figuring I was crying for the life that was to be for me,if I’m going of the words of this song, she’s kinda singing about my life today, my feelings – some of them.

OMG !

I think I’m weird you know.

Here’s the lyrics. I’m laughing here as this is so not one of my songs, however it must be as I know it all the way through – smiling – it’s got the word paradise in. Sunrise and Paradise. The word paradise must have been on my mind because of the name I choose for my blog.

I’ve lots of sunrises to share and lots of little pockets of paradise I’d like to share. Here’s one of them in the form of this song.

Here’s the lyrics.

Hey Lady, You Lady
Cursing at your life
Your a discontented mother
And a rich invented wife
I’ve no doubt you dream about
The things you never do
But I wish someone had to talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you

Oh I’ve been to Georgia and California
And anywhere I could run
Took the hand of a preacher man
And we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places
And friendly faces
Because I had to be free
I’ve been to paradise
But I’ve never been to me

Please lady, please lady
Don’t just walk away
Cause I have this need to tell you
Why I’m all alone today
I can see so much of me
Still living in your eyes
Won’t you share a part of a weary heart
That has lived a million lives
Oh I’ve been to Nice
And the Isle of Greece
While I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved liked Harlow in Monte Carlo
And showed ‘em what I’ve got
I’ve been undressed by kings
And I’ve seen some things
That a women ain’t supposed to see
I’ve been to paradise
But I’ve never been to me

Hey, you know what paradise is
It’s a lie, a fantasy
We create about people and places
As we’d like them to be
But you know what truth is
It’s that little baby your holding
And it’s that man you fought with this morning
The same one you’re going to make love with tonight
That’s truth, that’s love

Some times I’ve been to crying for unborn children
That might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life
And never knew I’d be bitter from the sweet
I’ve spent my life exploring
The subtle whoring
That cost too much to be free
Hey lady, I’ve been to paradise
But I’ve never been to me

I’ve been to paradise
Never been to me

Been to Georgia and California
And anywhere I could run

I’ve been to paradise
Never been to me

Been to Nice and the Isle of Greece
While I sipped champagne on a yacht

I’ve been to paradise
Never been to me

Radio Atenas fm alfenas 105,3 MHz
